Squatters have fled a burning home on Barkley Street in Footscray this morning, according to The Age.

Firefighters were called to the suspicious blaze at 12:30am and were told that squatters were living there and two were still in the building.

But as soon as the firefighters got ready to go in and find them, the two people fled. They were later taken to hospital for smoke-related injuries.

The fire was under control at 1:02 am. The house was badly damaged but no-one else was found inside.

It’s believed asbestos is in the building and Victoria Police are on scene.
