Melbourne is getting set for a return to the most extreme of temperatures this week.

The mercury is set to hit 39C on Thursday this weekend before we drop into a long weekend that will be quite wet.

In the lead up to a very hot Thursday, the city can expect 31C on Tuesday and 27C on Wednesday but that heat wave will end on Friday, when rain will fall to drop us to a 28C forecast for Australian Day on Saturday.

Up to 15mm could fall in the city on Sunday, alongside an expected top of 25C.

Across the state, “it’ll still get into the high 30s over northern Victoria, but on Sunday we’re back to the high 20s or getting into the low 30s,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said.
