A vegan cafe that has been charging male customers an 18 per cent ‘man tax’ to highlight the gender pay gap, is closing down.
Handsome Her, in Brunswick, made headlines in 2017 when it was announced they would charging men more and seating women first.
However, the cafe run by Alex O’Brien has now announced it will close on April 28.
It is not known why the cafe is closing but it has been facing widespread backlash for reverse sexism.
In a post on Facebook, Handsome Her said ‘The way the world responded (to the man tax) showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy.’’
The closure announcement has been met with mixed reaction, with one saying ‘I’m glad they tried. I’m glad they were vocal about it. I’m glad it failed. There’s literally no downside.’
Another said ‘I am saddened by this news. I loved visiting your cafe and its friendly staff. You will be missed.’
