Today we woke up to the horrible news that legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant had died in a helicopter crash. There were nine people onboard, including himself and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. There were no survivors.

It is expected that there will be more information about the tragedy in the next few days, but this is what we know so far.

The helicopter went down near Calabasas, California (about a 30 minute drive from LA). It crashed into rough terrain, and firefighters needed to hike to get to the crash site. The Los Angeles County Police told reporters it could take days to recover the bodies and officially identify them.

Some victims of the crash are reported to be longtime baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri and daughter Alyssa.

Bryant, 41, was on the way to the MAMBA Academy to coach his daughter. The term ‘MAMBA’ is a mantra Bryant adopted during his career after seeing the Mamba snake portrayed in the ‘Kill Bill’ films. The academy was holding a tournament which was cancelled after the news broke.

Basketball fans were quick to gather at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where Bryant spent his entire basketball career as a player for the Lakers. Those who loved Bryant laid flowers and candles as his photo looked over on the big screen.

During the Grammys, which were also held at the Staples Center, there were multiple tributes to Bryant who had a place within the music industry.
