The aspiration of a beautiful dress, cool car and a fancy corsage sparks much excitement for young students wrapping up their high school years.

The Year 12 Formal may be a staple on the celebrations for graduates, however for some, they’ll now miss out on the big day.

Top school Melbourne Girls College has announced they are scrapping the Year 12 Formal after “careful consideration of a number of significant factors.”

Reasons for the cancellation include student and parent feedback on expenses and the distraction from school work.

There are also rising concerns about the use of drugs and alcohol at unofficial after parties and pre-formal events.

The school also announced that the Year 11 formal will go ahead and well as the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner, which celebrates student achievements and support from parents and guardians.

On Thursday morning, KIIS 101.1’s Jase & PJ gave their two cents on the big decision.
