Tourists who disrespect sacred sites or go on booze-fuelled rampages in Bali will be sent packing, authorities have warned.
The caution comes days after a video showing a man splashing a woman’s backside with holy water from a temple went viral.
Governor Wayan Koster said that in future, tourists who are disrespectful or behave badly would have to go.
“We should just send them home,” the Daily Mail reported.
“They are being disorderly coming to Bali. We will give them this warning.
“There needs to be more order, from the services and facilities at tourist attractions, as well as the ethics of tourists. We will give a standard for guidance.”
The video, posted as a story to the Instagram account of the woman, Sabina Dolezalova, showed her boyfriend Zdenek Slouka splashing her backside with holy water at the Beji Temple in Ubud.
Unsurprisingly, the video sparked a barrage of criticism, which led the couple to issue an apology video.
“We are so sorry about the video from yesterday. We dishonoured the holy temple and the holy water in Ubud,” Slouka said.
“We didn’t know it [was holy] and we are so sorry about what happened.”
Bali Tourism Board’s Ida Bagus Agung Partha Andyana said that many tourists who were disrespectful in holy places did so because they weren’t aware.
“Most of them do disrespectful things in holy places because they do not know or understand the rules that apply here,” he said.
He added that tourists should perhaps be subject to stricter rules.
