Kmart shoppers are up in arms over the news that the Northcote Plaza store will be shutting its doors after almost 40 years.

The spokesman for Kmart, Steven Mann confirmed the news, saying that the store would not renew its lease which is due to expire in November 2020.

The store is a staple to the shopping centre and transformed the local area when it first opened in the early 80’s.

The news comes after many Australia retail giants have collapsed thanks to the rise of online shopping, including Jeanswest, Collette Hayman & EB Games.

Local shoppers have said that Northcote Plaza doesn’t have legs to stand on if the Kmart disappears.

Mr Mann confirmed that the permanent staff of the store will be given jobs elsewhere.
