Iconic jeweller store Michael Hill has become the first retailer to shut its doors in light of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement, Michael Hill said “The drop off in trade the company has experienced in Australia also reflects a customer base that is, of course, focused on more immediate issues.’’
They also said that due to their smaller formatted stores, the governments four square metre rule was “not consistent with the day-to-day conduct of our business.’
All 165 stores across Australia will be shut for an indefinite period of time and 2500 members of staff across 300 stores nationally will be impacted. They will be able to access leave entitlements and directed to access unemployment schemes such as Newstart.
