Recently I realised that instead of piling creams on my skin each night, I wanted to find out what I could actually do to REALLY help my skin. I realised besides a few fine lines, I didn’t really know what the problems were – even if there were any – and so I didn’t know how best to treat them. But there are issues, I just didn’t know it yet.

I made my way to the Clear Complexions clinic, which specialise in a more medical approach to skincare. I was booked in for a ‘Clear + Brilliant’ treatment, which promised to refresh your skin and prevent the signs of ageing.

I had my consultation with the lovely Emma, and she took some photos of my skin – but they weren’t just any photos. They were special photos that showed any vascular conditions (redness) and underlying skin damage (brown spots) hiding beneath the top layer of my skin.

As an avid sunscreen wearer, I was shocked. I had A LOT of sun damage under my skin. I mean A LOT. The kind that shows through as you get older and your skin becomes weaker and thinner.

I was also very red. I’m naturally a little pink, so that wasn’t all that shocking that the photo would show that, but I wasn’t at all prepared for the degree of HOW red I would be.

It seems that I have some vascular issues, predominantly broken capillaries around my nose and cheeks – but they could be fixed! Emma suggested a couple of things for me; the first being IPL and the second being Omnilux treatments. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) would be the treatment to zap away the visible broken capillaries that were causing most of the redness.

The heat causes the unwanted particles to break up into smaller particles which the body then removes via it’s natural waste processes. She also suggested Omnilux, which is a light treatment that can deliver effective treatment protocols for acne, skin rejuvenation and wrinkle reduction.

I booked those in for later, in the meantime it was all about the Clear + Brilliant treatment. The treatment started with a topical numbing cream, which made the precise laser energy (a little like laser hair removal but not as painful) a breeze.

My skin felt red and a little burnt afterwards, but that’s completely normal. The aim is to resurface your skin, so that you get rid of dead skin cells and reveal fresher, smoother, healthier-looking, glowing skin. My skin felt a little rough and dry for the next few days, and the redness completely subsided an hour after I’d left, but the next week my skin was visibly clearer and more vibrant.

To be honest, my first brush with a more medical approach to skincare has paid off!

However, if you’re battling similar skin issues and are unable to make the switch to medical skin treatments just yet, here are a few products that can help:
