This will break your heart.

A Mum whose son has Down’s Syndrome has written a letter after her son was left out of a classmates birthday party.

Jennifer Kiss-Engele, from Canada, was quick to point out that this was not an oversight as the entire class had been invited to attend the party, except for her son.

In the letter, which she uploaded to Facebook, Jennifer says she wants to try and help educate people and she believes there’s a valuable lesson to be learned.

“I want you to know that we don’t have an expectation of being invited to every birthday party. In fact, when Sawyer celebrated his birthday last year we only invited a few close friends as we wanted to keep it small, since it was over the Christmas break. But in your case, this is not the same reason. In fact, you have invited all 22 other children from the class except for my son.

I know it’s not because he’s mean, you couldn’t meet a happier child. I know it’s not because he’s not fun, he has a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh. I know it’s not because your child and him don’t get along, he’s brought up your child’s name on several occasions. The only reason why you decided it was OK to not invite my son to your child’s birthday party is because he has Down Syndrome,” Jennifer began.

The protective Mum goes on to say that people with Down’s Syndrome want the same things that other people want from life, to be loved, to laugh and to have meaningful lives.

Jennifer then explains that she should have tried to educate the class at the beginning of the year, so they would better understand Sawyer and the life he lives, however it never dawned on her to do this because he’s always just been Sawyer to her.

Jennifer finished by saying, “Please know that I am here to talk if you would like. I may be a mama bear but I am not a scary person. I recognize that we all make mistakes and at the end of the day, I think we both could have done better.”

However this story has a happy ending, the parent in question read Jennifer’s letter and then spoke to their child about Sawyer.

This resulted in the child creating a special birthday invite for Sawyer and Jennifer says the little boy has been beaming ever since and can’t stop talking about it.
