The Department of Foreign Affairs have recommended that Australian travellers should come home as soon as possible by commercial flights.

The warning comes after the government raised its travel advice to level three last week, asking Australians to consider whether their need to travel was necessary.

DFAT is now warning Australians that they may not be able to return home at a later stage if the country they are in close their borders.

“As more countries close their borders or introduce travel restrictions, overseas travel is becoming more complex and difficult,” the advice says, published on Tuesday night on Smart Traveller.

“You may not be able to return to Australia when you had planned to.

“Consider whether you have access to health care and support systems if you get sick while overseas. If you decide to return to Australia, do so as soon as possible.”

The advice also stresses that the coronavirus crisis is fluid and travel may be disrupted.
