If you’re thinking about clashing prints to be on-trend in spring/summer 2013, read on. There is a set way to tackle the meshing of patterns this season.

Stripes might be one of the season’s big looks, but when it comes to mixing and matching, it’s all about checks and florals.

Designers from New York to Paris all had the same idea, showing there is a distinct way to go about print-clashing in 2013.

Louis Vuitton showed one of the most wearable takes on the trend, with a collection that was ladylike and chic – something to keep in mind even when wearing patterns together.

Its models wore demure below-the-knee skirts with prim three-quarter sleeve jackets. These came in small monochrome checks, given an element of surprise by the bold yellow flower splattered across the skirt and front of the jacket. Using just one bloom ensured the eye was drawn to the colour and stopped the look seeming cluttered.

Dries van Noten upped the ante by offering a grunge-inspired take on the look. Rather than going all out 1990s, the designer neatened up the look a little, so models wore floral pencil skirts with checked waistcoats which were nipped in at the waist. The inclusion of clutch bags and delicate sunglasses ensured the look was both feminine and grown-up.

3.1 Phillip Lim went for a younger aesthetic, with checked trousers paired with tops tied just above the belly button and covered in petals.

There is no doubt this isn’t the easiest look to carry off: you’ll need to experiment before venturing out in public in your on-trend ensemble.

Our Advice:

  • Go for light colours wherever possible (dark reds, greens and blues might edge towards a tartan look).
  • It’s easiest to wear checks on the bottom and florals on top.
  • A good tip is to go for a sleeveless blouse so the patterns don’t become overwhelming.
  • For a more demure version, why not try wearing a floral dress check accessories – belt or shoes work well.
  • Consider how you can transfer this look to your home – a clash of floral and check cushions will instantly update your couch!
