When it comes to health trends, sometimes it can be a little more about what’s ‘in’ than what ‘works’… don’t hate me for saying that.

Make no mistake, the people harping on about the benefits of goji berries and chia seeds weren’t wrong. They’re great! It’s some of the other, weirder ones that deserve questioning. (Hello oxygen bars and placenta pills!)

Even though we’re only in February, 2015 has seemingly brought about it’s own brand of wacky health trends, see which ones you’d try below…

#1: Coffee with butter in it

If you’re saying ‘WTF’, you’re not alone. Why would we take something that we’re not really supposed to have a lot of and make it even worse for us? Well, apparently the answer is ‘energy.’

Integrative doctor Frank Lipman, who works with Gwyneth Paltrow, says that the 450 calorie drink is ideal for ‘mind clarity and a bit of pep.’ Others aren’t so sure, as it provides a large amount of calories and saturated fat with minimal nutrients.

#2: Snail facial


I don’t know if I would ever do this, no matter the beauty benefits, but yes – it does seem as though many people are letting snails slither over their faces for a 45 minute period – while their 14,000 tiny teeth produce a slight scratching sensation all over your face. The reason behind this wacky trend, is the snail’s mucus, Yep, apparently the slimy trail they leave behind is packed full of nutrients and antioxidants that can help to make you look younger.

#3: Bone broth

It may make you feel a little sick, but bone broth is exactly what you think it is. Its the boiling of poultry, beef or fish bones until they break down. The broth is said to bring many benefits, including shinier hair, improved digestion and reduced joint pain and inflammation.

#4: Cricket flour

It’s exatly what you think it is; crickets pulverised into a powder-like substance. The weird flour is supposedly delicious, and used to make protein bars, desserts and more. Why? Crickets are packed full of iron, B12, protein and have nearly as much calcium as a glass of milk.

#5: Charcoal


Not just something naughty children find in their Santa stocking any longer. Charcoal is now considered somewhat of a superfood. So much so, that people are actually drinking (and taking capsules full of) activated charcoal. Why? Well, many think charcoal has incredible detoxifying benefits, perfect for when you eat or drink too much, or are just in need of a general boost. Many experts say that the body detoxifies itself, so doesn’t need charcoal’s assistance.

#6: Coconut oil

We know it’s great to cook with (as it doesn’t turn rancid like other cooking oils), but now people are starting to put it in their coffee – and it doesn’t end there! Oil pulling is also an up and coming trend, and involves you swishing coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes for a healthier mouth. Why? Well coconut oil is full of good cholesterol, antimicrobials and antioxidants, among others.
