Bloating, it’s a total buzz-kill. You can eat a balanced diet, workout and still be left feeling like you’ve gained weight because your stomach feels gassy and bloated.

There are a several surprising foods that can leave you feeling balloon-esque all day. If you want to feel good, it’s worth avoiding the foods on this list.


Onions are one of the worst offenders. Which is frustrating news, because they’re basically in everything. Going out for dinner and trying to find an onion-free meal is no easy task! The reason they cause issues? Fructan, a carb found in onions, can spell trouble for your belly. “Foods like leeks, shallots, and onions are poorly absorbed and cause increased water content in the intestine,” The result? Gas production and bloating.


Summer is coming, and if you’re anything like me, you’re all about snacking on a cold, crisp slice of sweet, sweet watermelon on a hot day. Unfortunately, Watermelon has a super high level of fructose. Health experts say roughly 30 to 40% of people can’t fully absorb fructose, which leads to bloating, gas, and sometimes diarrhoea.

Yep, diet energy drinks, sugar-free gum and any light, sugar-free version of food you’re consuming are wreaking havoc with your precious gut. Sorbitol and xylitol absorb super slowly in the small intestine. Because of this, these sugar alcohols can cause gas, bloating, cramping, and sometimes diarrhoea.


An apple a day keeps the doctor away? It MIGHT keep the doctor away but it will bring on the bloat! Although fresh fruit might seem like a smart thing to snack on, pay attention to which fruits you’re choosing. Apples are high in fibre and also contain fructose and sorbitol, sugars found in fruits that many people can’t tolerate.


Yoghurt is commonly viewed as a ‘health food’ because it’s high in calcium and protein, but it could be doing you more harm than good. Many people have difficulty breaking down lactose, which gets fermented in your body and creates gas and bloating. Low-fat yoghurts are full of sugar, making them an even gassier choice. If yoghurt is leaving you feeling super bloated, we’d recommend switching to natural Greek or a dairy/lactose-free option.
