Moving house is not an ideal way to spend a weekend. In fact, in can be one of the most daunting experiences ever! Yet we all have to do it.. so we’ve compiled a few of the hottest ‘moving house’ hacks we could find just to make your life a little easier!
1. Download the Moving Day app.
This app will help you stay on top of EVERYTHING that needs to be remembered as well as keep track of your possessions with its built in bar code scanner and label maker!
2. Pack up the kitchen FIRST!
The kitchen is by far the most complicated room to pack, especially with so many fragile and oddly shaped belongings. PLUS, it’s a great excuse to eat out while all the crockery is packed away!
3. Once everything is moved into the new house, unpack the bedroom first.
Sleep takes priority! Whether you nap or get to bed early, when you’re absolutely exhausted there’s nothing worse than realising you’ve got a mattrass to unpack let alone a bed to make!! After the bedroom, priority number 2 should be unpacking the kitchen as this will rid you of most of the boxes.
4. Pack an overnight bag with all of the essentials.
There’ll be nothing better than having all your essentials within easy access including a change of clothes and toiletries. It’s also a great way to keep valuables like laptops/jewellery close and not run the risk of them getting stolen during the move.
5. Take a picture of how your electronics are connected before unplugging!
This way, you won’t need to try and remember what goes where, and it will be easy to see how everything connects once you’ve moved in!
6. Use Sandwich bags for cords and screws
Keeping all the screws and nails in a labelled plastic sandwich bag which clearly says what room or equipment they are for is SUPER handy!
7. Keep clothes on hangers for fast unpacking
There’s no need to pack hangers and fold clothes separately – stick them in a wardrobe box (yes, these do exist!) or into your suitcase with the hangers still attached. This will be very rewarding when you are able to unpack your clothes super quickly and hang them up straight away!
8. If possible, clean your kitchen and bathroom well before unpacking
Give these spaces a good scrub down as it is highly likely the last owners did not! You’ll want to take a long hot shower after a day of moving and you won’t want to do this in a grotty area! Put up a fresh shower curtain, stock the bathroom with new towels and toilet paper and light one of your favourite candles for relaxed vibes and beautiful smells!
