A new video streaming service is about to drop in Australia, like we’re talking this Sunday.

US-based Tubi will be available from September 1 and will have nearly 7000 movies and TV series ready to go, “which will rapidly expand in the near future”.

Unlike other TV streaming services in Australia, like Netflix, Disney+ and Stan, Tubi will be free.

However, like free-to-air TV, it’s ad-supported.

It was reported that users will have to sit through about 11 ads per hour, at least.


Australia is “the first of many launch initiatives to advance our global footprint,” said Tubi CEO Farhad Massoudi.

At launch, Tubi will have titles like The Blair Witch Project, Kickboxer and Stranger Than Fiction with “many more titles” added later, including The Grudge, Dirty Dancing, Reservoir Dogs and Saw.

In the US, Tubi pulls its almost 15,000 movies from more than 200 content heavy hitters like Lionsgate, Warner Bros, NBCUniversal, MGM and Paramount.

Customers can use a Telstra TV, Tubi.TV, Samsung smart TVs, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, phones, tablets and gaming consoles to access the service.

The service recently passed 20 million active users in the US.
