With Netflix in the game of renewing shows before they’ve even aired, fans have been a little concerned about the fate of Mindhunter, as there’s been no sign of a third season after the last one wrapped in August last year. We’ve finally got news, but it’s bad; the show is on hold and the whole cast has been released from their contracts.

Since Mindhunter‘s second season wrapped, the show’s Executive Producer David Fincher has been putting his time into his new film with Netflix, Mank, as well as producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. A Netflix rep told publications that Fincher decided to release the cast from their contracts as “it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own”.

Good news is, this doesn’t mean the show is cancelled, they also said David “may revisit Mindhunter again in the future”, though it’s clear they haven’t chosen a time for that return yet. In the meantime you can still relish in the latest season of Netflix’s other serial-killer series, YOU, which was just renewed for a third season.
