Ever wondered what the big fat letter ‘E’ that appears on the top left hand side on your phone screen really means?

Usually it’s there because your 3G or 4G is massively letting you down.

But if you’re anything like me, you probably have NO clue what it actually means!

According to Joe.ie, a resourceful person on the internet, the E stands for EDGE which means Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution

EDGE was 3G and 4G’s predecessor, from those ancient times when internet on our phones wasn’t even a thing.

So now, whenever your phone can’t connect to a 3G or 4G network, EDGE is the backup.

However if E doesn’t come up and instead you see GPRS, there’s no point in trying to use the internet… GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service so essentially, no internet available.
