Sam Smith’s Oscar acceptance speech has left a lot of people questioning what he was thinking.
He started his speech for winning Best Song for James Bond theme ”The Writings On The Wall”, by saying ” I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man has ever won an Oscar”.
Sam continued by saying ”If that is the case then I would like to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world”.
It’s not true and that is what has got people riled up.
The quote was actually referring to an openly gay man winning Best Actor, not the Oscars as a whole.
There have been three openly gay singers/songwriters who have won his category alone including Melissa Etheridge, Elton John and Stephen Sondheim plus there was also Dustin Lance Black who won for writing Milk in 2008.
It’s Dustin Lane who called him out on it as well.. Posting his acceptance speech on Twitter.

This is so awkward.. but we have all made mistakes, I guess.. just not on a world stage.
