It’s been a loooooong time since we saw our favourite dysfunctional cartoon family save Springfield from eternal doom inside a glass dome in the first Simpsons film.

But now we’ve heard news that the sequel that was rumoured to be in the works is actually happening!

Creator of the longest running cartoon TV show ever, Matt Groening, has confirmed the news of a ‘The Simpsons Movie 2’ while speaking at Comic Con International in San Diego.

Groening said that he wasn’t exactly sure when it will happen, but said that since Disney bought 20th Century Fox, that there’s no doubt they’d want to cash in on the success of The Simpsons with a second movie.

“No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I Think Disney wants something for its money,” he said.

This is despite the fact that Groening also admitted that the first film, released back in 2007, actually almost killed the entire series.

“This is a true answer. The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie,” he continued.

“That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”

The Simpsons is currently in it’s 31st season and has become the longest running TV cartoon ever.

This comes after a sequel film was rumoured back in 2018 in the Wall Street Journal.

Director of the first film, David Silverman, also said at the time of it’s release that he’d be open to making a sequel but that it wouldn’t be for “maybe another 10, 15 years” due to the mammoth effort it took to make the first one.
