In a recent interview with Variety’s Actors On Actors between Julia Roberts and Patricia Arquette, it was revealed that not only was there an alternate title to Pretty Woman AND that Arquette lost the role to Roberts, but ALSO that the ending wasn’t as romantic as it ended up in the Gary Marshall classic.
“So many, many, many years ago, one of my early auditions was for a movie called “3,000.” Most people don’t know that “3,000” was the original “Pretty Woman” script. And the ending was really heavy.” Arquette said.
To which Roberts replied: “Threw her out of the car, threw the money on top of her, as memory serves, and just drove away, leaving her in some dirty alley.”
Damn, SO grim!
3,000 eventually became Pretty Woman – one of the most iconic 90s rom-coms, no doubt due to the happy ending, because we all need a little bit of romance in our lives – in the movies, at least!
