The bets are off!

At least that is what a number of international bookmakers are saying as rumours circle that Queen Elizabeth II will step down from The Throne as part of her Christmas Day address this season.

While speculation on the Queen’s future has been a popular topic in 2014, the talk has heightened in recent months – as had wagers with a number of bookmakers claiming Christmas would be the day.

The large sums of money and sheer volume of bets at 10-1 has been enough for leading bookmaker Coral to suspend betting just in case.

“Throughout the year there has been major speculation about the Queen’s future but today’s gamble has really caught us by surprise,” Coral’s Nicola McGeady told The Daily Mail.

“As far as we are concerned there’s no smoke without fire when bets like this come through all in succession, so we have decided to be safe rather than sorry and pull the plug on the market,” added McGeady.

The Queen’s annual pre-Christmas luncheon was held at Buckingham Palace yesterday in the lead up to the ongoing festivities and commitments this week.
