Luke Hodge Responds To Rumours He Has Stood Down As Captain
Luke Hodge has responded to comments from The Age’s Caroline Wilson that he has taken a massive pay cut and let go of the captaincy of Hawthorn.
Hodge signed a new one-year deal with the Hawks ahead of their next finals birth this week but Age football correspondent Wilson said in an article published on Thursday ‘’Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge has taken a major pay cut and will probably relinquish the club captaincy he has held for six years in his call to play on in 2017.’’
However, Hodgey joined Matt & Meshel and when asked if he had taken a pay cut he said ‘’I think any senior player gets to this time of their career, you just want to play football. So I think taking a pay cut, so your club can bring young guys in, is just part of it.’’
He continued to say ‘’I think we have discovered in the last few years that if you take a pay cut so you can bring players in, that’s what you do.’’
Meshel Laurie pressed Hodgey on whether he had taken a pay cut or not and he said ‘’I think the oldest five guys have taken a pay cut.’’
It was also hinted that Hodgey would be standing down as captain for the triple premiership winning Hawks, and he said ‘’I will do the same as I have done in the last three years and sit down with Clarko and discuss what is best for the football club. If it is me being the captain, as it has been for the last three years, then I will continue to do that.’’
Hawthorn is set to finish inside the top 4 of the AFL and is going for their fourth consecutive Premiership.
