Yumi Opens Up About Her Battle With Postnatal Depression

On Thursday's show, the always lovely Yumi Stynes touched briefly on her experience with postnatal depression, explaining that she had found a fun - and unusual - way to celebrate her recovery.

And today the mum-of-four chatted a bit more about what she had gone through.

"I didn't want to make a big fuss because my experience wasn't that bad, and I'd also had it with one of my first babies," she told Monty. "I got medication and I worked through it, and then I came out the other side."

So, Yumi says, when she started her second "batch" of babies, she knew what to expect - although, her co-host was quick to point out, that that doesn't lessen the struggle.

Some of my greatest work right here

"I think a lot of people think, 'Oh, it wasn't that bad' but any form of it is not that pleasant," Monty said, and Yumi agreed.

"You could say it was a combination of things that led me to feeling quite awful," Yumi explained. "Crazy hormones, and then the big body. Just being physically burdened all the time, I hate pregnancy. And then when you're all smashed up from the delivery...

"Then I was missing going to work, the socialising... all that felt like it had been taken away, and I didn't have a replacement for it."

Yumi's first step was going to her GP, where, she says, she wasn't afraid to ask for what she wanted; after having a frank chat with her doctor, she asked for antidepressants, and set about making sure she was looking after herself.

"I took really good care of my health, to do exercise and to eat green things," she added "I still was depressed, but I knew it was a process."

Luckily Yumi's out the other side, but for anyone who may be struggling, the PANDA hotline on 1300 726 308 is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
