Warning In Place As Doorknocking Charity Scam Hits Melbourne
A scammer claiming to be a fundraiser for a cancer charity is targeting homes in Melbourne’s inner south.
Homes in Sandringham and Beaumaris were targeted last month by a doorknocker who said she was raising money for The Cancer Foundation of Australia.
The woman said she was fundraising to fight childhood cancer and provided receipts.
However, the website, phone number and ABN are non-existent.
The charity is also not listed as an Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission register.
Courtney Crane of Consumer Affairs Victoria said fake fundraisers deliberately imitate legitimate charities to trick consumers.
“Sadly, some people use the misfortune of others as an opportunity to scam,” Ms Crane said. Scams and fraudulent fundraisers can be reported at consumer.vic.gov.au or by calling 1300 55 81 81.
