Victorian Killer Jailed For Barbell Death Of Girlfriend
A jealous Melbourne man who murdered his girlfriend by striking her head with a barbell when their relationship broke down has been jailed for 24 years.
Shane Robertson killed his 29-year-old girlfriend, mother-of-two Katherine Haley, on March 9 last year in a "brutal and savage" attack, allegedly after she told him she didn't love him anymore.
Robertson, 28 at the time of the fatal attack, hit Ms Haley at least three times in the face and at least twice to her head following an argument at their Diggers Rest home.
Ms Haley's one-year-old daughter was in a neighbouring bedroom at the time.
According to court documents, after the murder, Robertson called his mother and said: "I kill her mum. I kill her. I didn't mean it" and later "I've done it. I've bashed her brains in. There is brains everywhere."
The Supreme Court of Victoria was previously told that after the murder, Robertson fled the scene on foot, yelling to police that he was going to kill himself.
This morning, Justice John Champion sentenced him to 24 years jail.
