Police Warn Melbournians Over Fake Police Scammer

Melbournians are being scammed by a man posing as a federal police officer.

The man has been flashing his badge to get freebies and in one case has conned a petrol station attendant into letting him drive off with a free tank of petrol!

He has also gained a free meal for himself and a woman at a Chinatown restaurant.

At the BP service station in Flemington, the man told the cashier that his name was John Higgston and gave a police badge and number to back up the claim.

Police believe the same man, along with a female, dashed off without paying for their food at a dining establishment in Little Bourke Street on July 4.

The man is described as being clean-cut with cropped hair and wearing a winter coat.

He is driving a Holden Calais, which is displaying false New South Wales plates.

The car was displaying numberplate CYB 52B.
