Melbourne Pizza Shop's Touching Facebook Post Goes Viral

Facebook posts from local pizza joints aren’t usually the source of viral content.

But this beautiful post from Newland’s Pizza Shop in Coburg North has rightly been spreading like wildfire.

In wake of the tragic murder of Aiia Maasarwe last week, there have been renewed calls for community members to step up and take action.

And that’s exactly what they did.

The owners posted a status declaring that their humble pizza shop is a safe haven for anyone who feels unsafe.

“We will notify the police if needed and make sure you are safe until you return home,” the Facebook post explains.

“If anybody feels unsafe, they are more than welcome to stay inside until they are at ease and feel comfortable in going back out. Community Safety and Respect is Our Priority.”

Unsurprisingly the responses have been overwhelmingly complimentary of the store’s initiative.

“Simple grassroots community spirit in action. Great work Newland’s Pizza. This is who we really are,” wrote one commenter.

“We can only fix this intolerable issue as a society if every single person in all of our communities gets on board and actually does something to help, like this gesture. I hope this sets a standard for all businesses and community operators,’ said another.

At the time of writing, the post has over 6800 likes and climbing!

The whole post reads:

"The Staff and Management at Newlands Pizza take community safety very seriously.
If you are in the area around Newlands (the corner of Murray Rd and Elizabeth St) and sense that you may be: - in danger
- being followed
- being verbally or physically attacked PLEASE enter the shop and alert our staff immediately.
We will notify the police if needed and make sure you are safe until you return home.
We are open EVERY night from 5pm to MIDNIGHT.
If anybody feels unsafe, they are more than welcome to stay inside until they are at ease and feel comfortable in going back out. Community Safety and Respect is Our Priority."
