Melbourne Man In Custody After Fleeing With Baby

A man who allegedly fled with a baby after assaulting his pregnant partner in Melbourne has been arrested and remains in hospital after a major operation to find him.

The 25-year-old man was arrested at a service station on the Hume Highway, near Donnybrook, about 6pm on Tuesday, and is in hospital with minor injuries.

The 10-month-old baby was found "safe and well", police said.

The Wodonga man allegedly assaulted his pregnant partner and the baby in Mentone before leaving in the Toyota Yaris sedan with the infant, claiming he would harm the child and himself.

Officers pursued the Yaris across Melbourne's southeastern suburbs before it was called off due to safety reasons after losing sight of the car near EastLink, shortly after 1pm.

He allegedly changed vehicles during the incident.

A 20-year-old Skye man and a Langwarrin man, 22, were taken into custody and being interviewed by police. The Wodonga man is yet to be questioned.

Two police officers are in hospital with non-life threatening injuries from the incident.
