Man Charged With Alleged Murder Of Childhood Friend

A man has been charged with murder, and a woman continues to be questioned by homicide detectives, over the discovery of human remains in Victoria's Gippsland region.

The man, 22, was charged late on Tuesday after he and a 19-year-old woman were arrested a day earlier at Altona.

Their arrests led to the discovery of remains, believed to belong to a missing 31-year-old Ballarat woman, last seen in the suburb of Canadian about 6.30am on Sunday.

Friends told The Herald Sun the pair had known each other since childhood, and their mothers were friends.

The 22-year-old Altona man didn't appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, with his lawyer saying he is 'mentally unwell' and not coping with being in custody.

"It's his first time in custody and he is vulnerable due to his youth," she said.

Posts to the victim's Facebook account show she was deeply passionate about ending violence against women.

At the start of February, she expressed her anger at the fact that four women had already died at the hands of men since the beginning of the year.

"Already there's been four women killed," she wrote on Facebook. "And we're only a month into the new year."

After Aiia Maasarwe's death, she reportedly posted: "Yet again".
