Major Development In Hunt For 'Seriously Dangerous' Escapee

Authorities are still searching for a jail escapee in Victoria and suspect he has crossed the border to South Australia.

Lachlan Mitchell, 20, was serving a 12-month sentence for serious driving and firearm offences when he left the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre about 2pm on Tuesday.

He got into a black ute that was waiting for him outside bearing South Australian number plate XAA230.

Mitchell, originally from Warrnambool, was arrested in September after the stolen car he was travelling in crashed into a B-Double tanker in Camperdown.

He was on the run from police at the time, wanted in the wake of a series of armed robberies.

According to The AgeIt's believed the black ute involved in helping the Warrnambool man flee from Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre was involved in a carjacking at gunpoint at Mil-Lel, north of Mount Gambier in South Australia.

South Australia Police Media reported that following a minor crash at the intersection of Sherwin Road and Attamurra Road, Mil-Lel on Thursday morning, "a grey Nissan Navara dual cab ute was stolen at gunpoint from the owner".

"The two male suspects abandoned a black Holden ute at the scene of the crash and drove off in the stolen car," an SA police spokesperson said.
