The girl was driving with a passenger when her Holden Astra hit a tree on the side of the road at about 1:10am.

Police are investigating whether the car was stolen and there

A teenage girl died last night after the car she was driving crashed into a tree in Melbourne's north early this morning.

The Holden Astra was travelling along Cooper Street in Epping about 1.10am when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree by the side of the road.

Two teenage girls were treated at the scene, but the driver died. Her friend was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police are investigating whether the car was stolen, and it has also impacted traffic with Cooper St initially closed in both directions, but the westbound lane is now open.

Vic Traffic are reporting:

"Westbound traffic on Cooper Street is now open through a service lane via Biodiversity Boulevard.

Eastbound lanes are still closed between Metrolink Circuit and The Hume Freeway.

Drivers should still consider Craigieburn Road East or the M80 Ring Road as alternatives to Cooper Street while closures is in place. Allow extra time. Sydney Road and High Street are carrying a lot more traffic at the moment."
