Arsonist On The Run After Blaze At Melbourne Restaurant

An Indian restaurant in south-east Melbourne has been destroyed by a deliberately lit blaze in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Namaskar Indian Restaurant on Glenferrie Road in Malvern was targeted just after midnight by an arsonist, who is still on the run.

It is reported that the arsonist lit an item and placed it in the front of the store before running away, however, police believe that CCTV footage from across the road may have captured the suspect leaving the scene.

The fire grew quickly and caused damage to two neighbouring businesses and threatened surrounding homes.

Residents noticed the smoke and firefighters were called to the scene. It took crews over half an hour to gain control over the blaze.

The cause of the fire was determined suspicious and the case was handed over to the Arson Squad.

The extent of the damage is expected to cost $300,000 to repair.

The arsonist is still on the run.
