Melbourne Is The WORST In The Country At One Thing

Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network has been rated as the nation's worst.

The rail system is ranked as the lowest in eight categories, although it has improved in some areas, including now have fewer delays and less overcrowding.

Adding to passengers pains though were smelly passengers, loud-talking passengers, coughs, sneezers and misbehaving children.

Canstar, a comparison website, surveyed 6000 adults across Australia and for the fifth year running, TransPerth took top honours with five stars, while Adelaide Metro, Sydney Train and Queensland Rail all scored four stars.

Melbourne’s Metro system scored just three stars and trailed in every single category including service reliability, ticket price, comfort, ticketing system, timetables, station cleanliness and safety.

However, Melburnians pay the least for a week of travel at just $35, but the cost of a myki card and the ticket system were the worst performers.

Overcrowding was also the worst in the country, with 70 percent feeling uncomfortable.

Canstar editor Simon Downes said the result painted a ‘bleak’ picture of rail travel in Australia.

“No rail network is perfect, and most reasonable people will be able to accept bad days, whether it’s because of delays, overcrowding or any number of other issues that can occur at busy times. However, it’s when these problems become the norm, rather than the exception, that passengers have every right to feel angry,” he said.

Metro’s figures so that they have hit their punctuality targets for 53 months in a row, with 92.2 per cent of services running on time in August.
