Pilot Strikes: Australia Day Travel Plans In Disarray

If you’re headed out of Melbourne for the long weekend you’ll definitely want to read ahead.

Tigerair pilots announced on Monday evening they’ll be taking industrial action at airports around the country this Friday.

Members of the Australian Federation of Air Pilots (about 75 percent of Tiger’s pilots) will walk off the job between 5am and 9am in protest of a current pay agreement.

“The decision to engage in a work stoppage was not made lightly,” Senior Industrial Officer James Lauchland said in a statement.

“Tigerair pilots fly the same aircraft as their counterparts at Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas but this is not reflected in their employment conditions.

“The current agreement is well below industry standards, both in terms of pay and conditions. Tigerair pilots are simply looking for a fair deal.

In response, a Tigerair spokesperson said, “Tigerair continues to negotiate in good faith with the AFAP/VIPA and we look forward to reaching a mutually beneficial outcome as soon as possible.”

Tiger customers were issued a travel alert for the period. 'If any change should be made to your flight, we will be in contact as soon as possible with your options, including re-accommodation on another Tigerair Australia or Virgin Australia service wherever possible,' the alert said.
