Macca's Just Totally Reinvented The Straw
In what can only be described as one of the most over-engineered and unnecessary items on the planet, comes this story out of the US.
Actual engineers - from two separate engineering companies - collaborated with McDonald’s to come up with the S.T.R.A.W – which stands for Suction Tube for Reverse Axial Withdrawl.
I literally had to check the calender that it wasn't April 1.
The space-age straw has been released alongside their Shamrock Shake, a mint-and-chocolate milkshake which celebrates, you guessed it, St Patrick’s Day.
Clearly the regular straw wasn’t up to the task – whereas this J-shaped straw was designed with side holes to merge multiple layers of the milkshake in one sip.
Principal engineer Seth Newburg elaborated: “from a physics perspective, it’s actually quite difficult to deliver a proportional amount of both chocolate and mint flavours in a single sip.”
They used more than 100 milkshakes in the testing phase, modelling the milkshake flow with computer software and 3D printing to perfect the design.
Two thousands S.T.R.A.W’s have been produced.
