Woman Wanted For Running Her Town Using WhatsApp
Lidiane Leite is the 25-year-old mayor of Brazilian town Bom Jardim, well she was.
Now, she's currently on the run from law enforcement after it was discovered that she didn't actually live in Bom Jardim and was running the town via popular mobile app, Whatsapp.
Leite ran for mayor in 2012 in the small town after her then-boyfriend Beto Rocha was banned from running due to corruption charges against him.
She stepped up to run for mayor in his place, and when she won, appointed Rocha as her advisor, though they had broken up earlier this year.
Prosecutors then discovered that she was living in another town, called Maranhao, and that the only contact she had with anyone in Bom Jardim, including her cabinet members, was through Whatsapp.
The BBC reports that Leite is also being investigated for misappropriating the equivalent of around $4 million in state education funds.
Currently on the run for 11 days, an arrest warrant as been issued for both Leite and Rocha.
