The New True Crime Series That Will Leave You Terrified

Binged 'The Staircase' in less than two days? Theorised numerous conspiracy theories around Madeleine McCann's disappearance? Watched extended video interviews with those involved in the Steven Avery/Brendan Dassey case after finishing 'Making A Murderer'? Guilty as charged.

If you're like us, then you're in desperate need of a new true crime series, and thankfully, we've found the perfect show.

Before we start, this show is based on a horrifying true story, and is definitely not for the faint-hearted so proceed at your own risk.

US streaming service Hulu has brought to life the true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's life and the murder of her controlling mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

The haunting story follows Dee Dee (played by Patricia Arquette), a mother trying to do her best for her chronically-ill daughter Gypsy Rose (Joey King) after moving to Missouri from Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina.

Springfield, Missouri immediately becomes captivated by the mother and daughter duo, and are in admiration of Dee Dee's dedication to her daughter's chronic sickness.

However, this tale turns into one of murder, lies and manipulation.

For years, Dee Dee told friends and family that Gypsy suffered from a range of different illnesses, including leukaemia, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, and had the mental capacity of a 7-year-old child.

Gypsy was confined to a wheelchair as a result.

The community was unaware that the young adult was perfectly capable of walking, and was in fact, completely healthy. Fearing her mother's threats of physical retaliation, she would 'act' as a chronically ill child, and in return, the family received a free house, trips to Disneyland, concerts and more.

Over the next few years, Gypsy yearned to break free from her mother. She began secretly corresponding with men online and eventually began an online relationship with Nicholas Godejohn, the man who would accompany her in murdering Dee Dee.

The Act is truly stranger-than-fiction and depicts the lies, manipulation and subsequent murder of a seemingly innocent mother in a small town.

The true crime series premiered on Hulu on March 20, and is expected to be released in Australia later this year.
