Love A Nice Diet Coke? We Have Some Really Bad News For You.

If you love getting into some Diet Coke during but you have noticed your waistline has expanded a little… then science has the answer for you.

Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital have found out it is all to do with the sugar substitutes.

Research undertaken with mice, who had aspartame put in their water, has found they gained more weight than mice who had a similar diet without aspartame.

They believe it is because of the product an aspartame breakdown creates called phenylalanine, which interferes with the enzymes that prevent obesity.

Richard Hodin of MGH said ‘’‘Sugar substitutes like aspartame are designed to promote weight loss and decrease the incidence of metabolic syndrome, but some clinical and epidemiologic studies have suggested that these products don’t work very well and may make things worse.

‘We found that aspartame blocks a gut enzyme called intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) that we previously showed can prevent obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome; so we think that aspartame might not work because, even as it is substituting for sugar, it blocks the beneficial aspects of IAP.’
