Heartbreakingly Beautiful Debut Of Julia on Sesame Street
Grab the tissues because today is brought to you by the letter ‘J’.
Sesame Street has debuted the much anticipated character of ‘Julia’ and she is a beautiful addition to their family.
Earlier in the year, the creators of Sesame Street revealed that Julia would become a main fixture on the show – with one significant distinguishing feature – she has autism.
Julia will explore awareness in difference and create a relatable character for children with a developmental disorder.
The young character was first introduced in 2015, playing alongside Elmo and Abby Cadabby, as part of an online-only Digital Storybook story called Sesame Street and Autism: See the Amazing in All Children. Le sigh.
This new addition is probably the most realistic and sympathetic portrayal of an autistic character that has been put on television - and it’s truly beautiful.
In the clip, Julia is reluctant to shake Big Bird’s hand at first and Big Bird questions whether she likes him.
The clip is an exquisite exploration of a new friendship – and tackles the varying ways that we communicate.
